An Argument for User Initiated Sound
I was reading a post from Seth Godin’s blog this morning and he brought up one of the most common arguments I have with advertisers and sales people alike…. Incorporating sound into their ads.
Now, the incorporation of sound can be an extremely effective tool to use in online advertising, if it’s done right. On the other hand, sound that starts playing as soon as you open the page (and typically when you open every page) can be an extremely annoying problem to your site visitors. Especially, if they don’t know where the sound is coming from and how to shut it off if they want to.
In my experience, one of the best policies to have with regards to sound is having it User Initiated. This is typically done by including “Sound On” button on the ad itself, or some type of volume control. The default setting should be “off” and if the user is interested in what the sound may be, they can turn the sound on.
One of the key things you want to remember when it comes to sound in advertising; Sound is advantageous to the advertiser… but at what cost to the user experience of your site visitors.
