What is a podcast?
The word Podcast actually comes from the joining of two words “iPod+Broadcast”. Podcasts are audio files, typically in mp3 format, that are either downloaded directly from a web site, or through an application such as Apple’s itunes. The podcast can then be listened to directly from the computer, or transferred to a portable music player such as an iPod.
Revenue Oppotunities:
Revenue can be generated from a podcast in several forms:
- Advertising: Audio ads can be placed in the podcast, similar to how radio works. The placement of these ads are typically either at the beginning or the end of a podcast. Something like, “This podcast is brought to you by EarthtoGeek.com” or something similar.
- Subscription: Before a podcast can be downloaded, one can require a person to pay subscription fee.
- Cost Per Download: This form of revenue model would require a user to pay a fee per podcast to download.
- Sponsored: In print, this type of advertising may be called an “Advertorial” where the advertiser pays the podcaster to do a segment or an entire podcast about a specific product or service.
